Get hummer card and make the card fly around your body. People will be interested when they see that.

Lonewolf116,

I have done magic a few times out on the streets and when I did I didn't ask people if they wanted to see a magic trick. Now I don't know if this is the approach that you took to get peoples attentions but If it is 9 times out of 10 people will say No Thanks and keep walking on. I found out that if you just walk up to someone that is standing with friends and say I would like to show you something really cool, watch this... Then just go into the trick. Usually I do a flourish with cards to let them know that I am a magician. You will have a difficult time with the people that are walking. With these people you can say something like "watch this amazing thing that I learned." and go into a trick. Just remember don't ask if they would like to see a magic trick. Just seems like people don't care to waist time with watching. Just be assumptive. If you ask a question it gives them a way out to leave.

Hope that helps out some.

well that does make sense from both of you, thanks, the hummer card would draw people to you and just walking up and showing them a trick makes them want to see more, because if you ask somebody if they want to see one they will most likely say no unless you are a famous magician, but if i go downtown soon i will definately try waht you guys said

Just say, "Hi, I'm a Magician, want to see my little red balls?"

this one time i found two guys and asked them if they wanted to see magic, they walked away after saying "excuse me", but then i stood in the middle of the sidewalk and started doing flourishes and 20 kids started watching me, i asked if they wanted a dollar, took out the dollar and folded it, then switch it into a leaf and gave it to them, when they notice they chased me and threw a basketball at me...

Remember: Some Will, Some Won't, Who Cares? Whose next?

Also, try joining a magic club in your town. You should be able to get some mentorship there and the chance to practice in front of a forgiving crowd.

why are people really going out and trying to do "street magic"? its just a concept that david blaine built his TV specials on. even he dosent really do it unless the camera is on. "street magic" is a good way to get a face full of pepper spray

the only true street magic is busking, and it's nothing like david's show. and if you're good you may earn a little cash too.

if you want to see real street magic avoid DB and take a look at Gazzo

Kevin is right on the money here.
The term street magic is not something that exsisted in the real of close-up magic until 98-99 when DB first special Magic Man aired on abc.

Busking is the correct term for TRUE street magic. Also check out Kozmo, him and Gozzo are tied for best street magician..they will have you CRACKING UP!

Now here is the problem.
The reason you and MOST people do not have much success in "getting an audience" in the streets is because you have not built a reputation with your audience yet, no repor, no communication, and most important..NO TRUST! Unless you have these as foundations BEFORE you do ONE TRICK..you will fail everytime..(ok well not everytime because drunk and rude people will take the bait..but what caliber are we saying our magic is when we settle for that..might as well show a dog your pass).

And let me also speak on "flourishes to get attention".
A great writer and performer, said that if you are doing flourishes to get attention so that then you can do magic for someone, is the equivalent of a carney pushing a nail in his nose so that people will go come to the carnival.
You do not have the right to bother someone on the street with what you can do...you must earn that right and that comes from building a relationship with that person through conversation and and genuine interest in them. Once you do that you will see a MAJOR differance in what you can get away with with anyone. Magic then becomes fun and exciting and wonderous to them. Because you have shown a true interest in THEM an they will in turn return the favor.

Now here is where we have the incredible upper-hand. Magic can be THE most EXCITING and EXHILIRATING experiance someone can have if done correctly..not much can top it, and we brothers and sisters, have the amazing task and honor to bring it to the masses! But it will only reach it's full potential when applied correctly.

Dont go to the people seperatly, just walk down the street to a crowded area, do a little trick in front of them all that you can perform on yourself, be sure to get their attention but do it with something normal; dont yell, dont go crazy: Just say or do something that has an connection to that little trick. Once they saw that (and if the trick is good) it will be much easier to go a step further and ask a volunteer.
But thats what I think.
