| Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Its something many magicians claim to be doing when they are working with spectators, though sometimes its just rubbish. |

>>Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Its something many magicians claim to be doing when they are working with spectators, though sometimes its just rubbish. :) MANY times it's just rubbish - although there are a handful of viable tricks within all the hype and BS. But, there are still some who swear by it, so it may be an option as a subject. Suggestion/hypnosis certainly. H&N |

In response to Harling's (can I call you that?) suggestion, I propose we start a new category and put mental ism, hypnosis, suggestion and NLP all in. If in the future there is enough volume in any of those subjects, we can branch out from there. I'm still not clear about NLP is, can you give an example please? Is it a form of entertainment? Dante, I'm curious why you say NLP is rubbish, how do you mean that? I guess what I'm asking is how would you differentiate NLP claims with say, a magician that claims to put a card through a window? |

:) Yes, Harling's fine - though on occassion Nyrup will respond in my place. The core thread containing the subjects you suggest, then branching out if there's a demand, is a good idea. Using NLP as a Geist (pretending that you're using it to create an effect) is one thing, but the issue is really whether or not there's anything valid within it as a whole in the 'real world'. As I said above, I'm not a believer, but it is a popular subject. H&N |

How wonderful to see Harling and Nyrup on here too. I hope you remember me. We both left comments on each other's Myspace Profiles in the past two days. I was telling you how much I enjoyed your book Sleight of Mind. Geist is on my to buy list! Listen to Harling and Nyrup, people. They know what they are talking about when it comes to NLP and Hypnosis. ~Robert |

Hi EC. Of course I remember you Thanks for your kind words.
I hope you enjoy Geist too, it's a book of original effects (not psychological work as in SoM), but also a way of continually adapting your tricks to suit different situations. This is important as it allows you to perform say, just 5 of your favourite effects in lots of different ways. We've been through phases just like everyone else of continually buying new effects to check out the methods and adapt them, but it can be a waste of time and you end up with piles of useless junk and empty pockets. If you know ten good tricks, one from each phase of mentalism (billets, numbers, book test, etc), then in essence you already have all the tools you need to make up your own effects.
It's good practice to get an effect and develop it so that you can play it happily to one or a hundred people. We all have a tendency to underplay simple tricks, and that can be an error. A trick is as small, or as big, as you make it. There's no reason why a very simple one-pass and peek card trick can't be made into a five minute stage production with elephants and dancing girls Nobody knows that it's a simple trick, so how you do it is entirely up to you. If you 'throw away' a trick by underplaying it you're wasting your own material and not optimising what you're doing. Adapt each effect to the situation and play every one as big as you can if it's appropriate, there's no reason not to.

Been diving thru lots of research these last few weeks. NLP works by opening their imaginations: pacing and leading. Anchoring is a fantastic tool as well. Some common blends from the NLP Universe are: “I saw someone do this once...” “I don’t know how soon you’ll feel...” “I want you to bear in mind that ...” “I wonder if...” “I don’t know how soon you’ll...” “I wonder, could you...” “I’d like to suggest that you...”“I want you to bear in mind...” “I want you to become aware that...” “I’d like you to pretend that...” “If you could, would you...” “It’s not important that you’re feeling overwhelmed by the new sensation of being...” “Is it that you are feeling...” “Is it possible that you’re feeling...” “Is it useful that this feeling of...” “Is it that you have this feeling of..." “It’s just like this feeling of being...” “It’s as if you feel...” “Perhaps you’re feeling...” “Perhaps you can feel the...” Seeing how these are used is more then interesting. and it is only the tip of the iceberg. I find the hours of research to be absolutely fascinating. |

| Check out Derren Brown's 'Tricks of the Mind'. Derren has a section on NLP. He gives a full and interesting analysis of NLP from a performers point of view. Derren's critique on hypnosis and suggestibility are fascinating. A good read, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone , even superficially with mind reading/mentalism etc. |
