I have been waiting for the release of Drawn Apart since I saw the demo of it in August. I had a certain idea for the effect that I wanted to play around with and show off to my girlfriend. You see, my girlfriend has a little comic series with a female character named Euthanasia Adams and Suicide Annie. Suicide Annie is Euthanasia’s doll that has slit zipped wrist and the effect that I wanted to do with Drawn Apart was to unzip her slit zipped wrist. I couldn’t wait for this chance to manipulate HER drawing. While it is possible for me to move her ink it is recommended that you choose what is drawn. Some may see that as a downside but I don’t. You can let your spectator draw the figure you choose. Of course they’re some limitations but I believe letting your spectator draw the figure only adds to the impact of the effect. I haven’t yet used the method behind Drawn Apart to manipulate my girlfriend’s drawing but I will. What I have been doing is coming up with ideas using the method, some just attacking me while I am ridding the subway. It is THAT versatile. It CAN work with everything. Not only that but you also have a forum where you can throw your ideas around with other people and some of the creators, with the exception of Chase Hubler (May he Rest in Peace).

The download is over an hour long FILLED with different variations explained by three different people. When you learn the very first variation taught you will understand the rest without a problem. Lighting and focus would have to be my ONLY complaint with the download. Since the variations are stretched amongst three different people the quality of the clips vary. Sometimes it is out of focus and bright other times it’s clear as day. Don’t worry; the different camera qualities do not hinder anything. You will be able to learn from each person. The teaching is very clear and understandable. You don’t have to speak English to understand what is going on; you could learn the effect while having the video muted, it’s THAT visual. Everything is touched upon, nothing is left unnoticed. You will finish watching the DVD knowing exactly what you have to do and what you need, you probably already have everything at home.

The greatest thing about this effect is the fact that it’s done on PAPER. Everyone has paper. That’s right; you can borrow the paper and the ink used. If you can’t you are told to use your business card. Using your business card is incredible. It’s a magical souvenir for your spectator with your contact information. If they have any doubt in their mind whether they want to hire you all they have to do is turn that business card around and remember the day you manipulated permanent ink. That WILL sell your magic even more.

Imagine, pulling out your business cards wrapped in a rubber band and drawing a frog in a box. You let your spectator sign your business card and you proceed to move the lid of the box. The frog jumps out of the box; this is all happening on your business card. As you take the card out a live frog drops appears and the frog drawn on the card disappears. With Drawn Apart, ideas such as these are only limited by your imagination. Get this effect, it is visual manipulation everyone can understand and appreciate.
