I was wondering what all of your opinions were about using camera angles and special effects to make mind blowing tricks. Criss Angel has been known to use special effects, camera cuts, etc.
On one hand, using these tricks can lead to amazing illusions that attract more people into the art of magic, as well as creating something new, rather than the same trick over and over again...
Although on the other hand, using special effects to create illusions is cheating, and cannot be considered a "magic trick." It also takes away the creativity of coming up with a real way to perform those illusions.
So what are your views on this subject? I know a lot of magicians who hate Criss Angel for cheating with his tricks, but I also know many magicians who praise Criss Angel for making magic popular again. |

Well, it depends on your audience. If his TARGET audience are the people at home then he is accomplishing his magic. Is magic ultimately cheating people anywho, whether its with camera editing or a "dirty" hand? Either way youre one ahead of your target audience. |

| I can understand positioning the camera in a certain spot but to edit in items and edit out others and use effects to make it look like you acomplish something impossible is simply unacceptable in my book. it is downright cheating. i guess it wouldnt bother me so bad if criss didt always say "i dont use stooges" or "i dont use camera tricks at all". i dont know thoug. just my two cents |

| If the "magic" is happening in a video editing studio instead of during the live taping of the performance, then it's not cool with me. |

Video editing is just one more tool to use in accomplishing an illusion. Do I use it? No, but then I am not performing on television. Saying that using it is cheating is like saying that using gimmicked decks or coins is cheating.

| well i would agree but if you think about it using a gimmick does not alter the effect that an audience sees it is part of the effect that the audience sees and camera or no camera the audience sees the same thing but i dont think it is fair to have an audience on tv and tell everyone that they are seeing the exact same thing |

Well thats when wordplay comes into mind as well as knowing who youre target audience is. If your target audience are the people at home then it may be fine to use edits.

If you think about it, people pay us to lie to them for their entertainment. If they are entertained by it, does it really matter if they are seeing the same thing? Usually the audiences used when video editting is used are stooges anyway. Just some food for thought.

| so lying to your specs is ok? isnt that against the code of ethics? i believe SAM and IBM made a code of ethics which states : 4) Discourage false or misleading statements in the advertising of
effects, and literature, merchandise or actions pertaining to the
magical arts. |

I think "advertising" is an important word in that code.

Well then Magic itself and a lot of peoples presentations are misleading and breaking code. You make the "statement" that their card is going into the deck when it isnt, youre lying to them. Sooo?!?!

The way I see it, when I see an amazing performace on TV or a video, I'd like to think that what I saw, is what really happened. I'd hope that it would make no difference if I see this in person, or on TV. I'd like to think that I really am watching someone levitate fifty feet in the air, rather then watching some guy standing in front of a green screen... Someone brought up gimmicks and trick decks. In my opinion, using a trick deck is still better than using special effects, because at least you can still perform a gimmick trick in front of real people. Another reason I dislike it, is because I could watch some skilled magician levitate five feet in the air in front of a live audiance. I would be absolutly amazed by this, while other people might think "Oh yeah, I saw Criss Angel levitated over three stories high!" Over time, if people continue to use special effects to pull off stunts, it may raise the standard of magic. In the future, it may become that the only way to outdo another magician is to hire a better editing team... |
